Charlotte Academy of Music is excited to host a crayon drive this summer to support The Crayon Initiative through CAMcares. CAM families and anyone in the Charlotte area are encouraged to help us in this endeavor! If you have a young child in your family, you most likely have some old crayons at home. Many resturants also hand out free crayons to children. Those left on restaurant tables have to be discarded. Instead, these crayons can be recycled and used by children in hospitals across our country. The Crayon Initiative has collected 11.5 million used crayons from restaurants, schools and homes. More than 100,000 pounds of crayons have been prevented from going into landfills. The Crayon Initiative has helped over 50,000 kids through creative expression in over 90 hospitals across 25 states. From The Crayon Inititive’s website we learned that…
“More than a half-million pounds of crayons are discarded every year, turning into a waxy sludge that clogs our landfills and never biodegrades. The Crayon Initiative collects donated crayons from restaurants, schools and homes across the country, then melts them down and remanufactures them, reducing waste. Better yet, the recycled crayons are distributed to art programs at children’s hospitals across the U.S., brightening the lives of young patients during their stay.”
Drop off your used crayons in the box provided at our Front Desk. If you would like to confirm office hours, please call Danelle at 704-545-7400. We greatly appreciate your participation in this CAMcares project!
