Mandolin Lessons

Whether you’re a guitar player looking to branch out into a new instrument, or are a beginner that has never learned to play an instrument before, the mandolin is an excellent choice. With a unique sound and a rich history, you won’t regret learning to play the mandolin. At Charlotte Academy of Music you can realize your dream of learning to play the mandolin! Our teachers will customize a lesson program specifically for your musical interests and goals.

The Mandolin

If you’ve seen a country music band perform live or on TV, you might have noticed someone playing what looks like a small guitar. That instrument is a mandolin, a musical instrument in the lute family. Mandolins typically have four courses of doubled metal strings, for a total of eight strings, that are tuned in unison. While there are many styles of mandolin, only three are common: the round-backed mandolin, the carved-top mandolin, and the flat-backed mandolin.

Our Mandolin Teacher

Chad Thompson

Chad Thompson has been obsessed with everything music since he first heard The Beatles as a very young child. Since then, music has been an inescapable passion in his life that has led him to many exciting experiences and has helped him travel and see the world. Since graduating from UNCC, Chad has been performing music professionally for the last 10 years and has been a part of many amazing productions ranging from Broadway-style theatre work to contemporary, avant-garde performance art.

Chad began teaching music lessons in college as a way to pay for his studies; however, he quickly realized that teaching music was something that he was just as passionate about as playing music itself. Chad writes, “Seeing youth – the future of the world – making strong, personal connections with all of the great art and music out there is truly inspiring and humbly reminds me of why I became an artist to begin with.”

We are delighted to have Chad on faculty at Charlotte Academy of Music teaching Guitar, Bass, Double Bass, Mandolin, and Ukulele. Chad brings to his teaching extensive performance experience as well as a deep understanding of music theory, notation, and history.
