Piano Lessons
Charlotte Academy of Music offers comprehensive piano lessons for kids, teens, and adult students. Our experienced, inspiring piano teachers customize a lesson program specific to your goals and interests.
We believe the piano is the perfect starting instrument. That’s exactly why our early programs, Music Explorers and Music Adventures, are piano based. Kids thrive when they enjoy learning. Your child will love the proven, innovative piano methods we use for teaching technique, music theory, and sight reading. From your child’s first music class, to Private Lessons, the goal is to foster and nurture your child’s growth, leading to a life-long love of music!

The Piano
The story of the piano began in Padua, Italy in 1709, in the shop of a harpsichord maker named Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori. Many other stringed and keyboard instruments preceded the piano and led to the development of the instrument as we know it today.
There is something so appealing about playing the piano. We are immediately drawn to its mellow sounds. People are quick to gather round the piano at parties. Today the piano is everywhere..in schools, churches, homes, and definitely on the radio. From Mozart to Lang Lang, Stevie Wonder to Barry Manilow, the piano is used in a variety of musical genres. Many famous musicians began their music journey with the 88 keys. Lady Gaga was once accepted to study piano at Julliard. A classically-trained pianist, Elton had started piano lessons at age 7. By the age of 11 he had won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. Taking on the name of her favorite instrument, Alicia Keys (real name Alicia Cook) began playing the piano at the age of seven, and graduated from the Professional Performing Arts School at 16. In addition to piano-driven power ballads like “She’s Always a Woman,” Billy Joel Joel has also dabbled in classical music, and once released an album of self-composed classical piano pieces called Fantasies and Delusions.
Lessons You Will Love
CAM offers two ways to enjoy piano lessons, in person at Charlotte Academy of Music, or online via virtual music lessons. All CAM students, those who have lessons in person at the Academy and those who connect with their teacher without having to leave the comfort of their homes, have access to all CAM events…recitals, special events, incentive programs and more!
Piano lessons aren’t just for kids. We love working with our adult students, too! Maybe you had lessons as a child and are ready to return to music. Maybe you are a beginner. At CAM, our teachers will help you fulfill your musical goals at your own pace. Whether you desire to play Chopin or be the next Alicia Keys, we can’t wait to help you become the pianist you dream to be.
Keyboard vs. Piano
A piano is always best, but we realize some families may want a less expensive starter instrument. A 72 or 88 key, touch-sensitive keyboard can usually suffice for beginner piano lessons. After a year of lessons, students should upgrade to a digital or acoustic piano. Intermediate and advanced level students should have an acoustic piano at home. It is important to keep your acoustic piano regularly maintained as well. We highly recommend Larry Griffin, CAM’s Registered Piano Technician, if you are in need of piano tuning or maintenance.
